Car Battery Problems
Your car battery supplies the electricity to your vehicle that powers your starter, ignition, lights, stereo and more. Your battery gets recharged through your car’s alternator and using the power of the engine.
The average battery life is usually 4 years, so you will need to replace your battery at some point. You may notice trouble starting your car yourself, and Hogans Auto Service can check your battery and determine if it needs replacing.
Your local Hogans Auto Service technician will check the power specifications and make sure your battery has the correct ratings for your vehicle. Two important metrics they will check are the Cold Cranking Amps and the Reserve Capacity. The Cold Cranking Amps rating (CCA) refers to the battery's capacity for starting your engine in colder temperatures - essential for our Canadian winters. The RC rating refers to the battery's Reserve Capacity - the time in minutes that the battery will power essential car functions if the charging system fails.
Your vehicle's electrical system is actually always on and the battery continues to run the computers that operate the vehicle so they retain their settings. These use little power and under normal circumstances and should not drain the battery.
Car Alternator Problems
Your car battery would eventually go dead without a built-in recharging system. Your vehicle’s recharging system consists of the alternator, alternator drive belt, battery, voltage regulator, main fuses, charge indicator, cables and wiring harness.
A battery stores about enough power to get your vehicle started. After that, it's up to the alternator to recharge the battery and create enough electricity to power your vehicle's electrical components. If you notice that your vehicle's electronics are not working properly, take your vehicle to Hogans Automotive Services as soon as possible.
